ACCESS Golfers By Day, Fighters By Night
Screening

October 28, 2024
South Shore Cultural Center / Robeson Theater

The first episode, “Golfers By Day, Fighters By Night” sets the stage by highlighting Joe Louis’s illustrious boxing career and his decision to retire to ultimately play more golf. It explores his foray into golf and the vehement and vociferous prohibition to African Americans playing professional golf. Interviews with golfers chronicling the racism provide insights into the societal landscape as far back as the beginning of the 20th century to present day.

"The documentary was amazing! Very well put together. And the interviewees were everything. Tracy and crew did an excellent job. So proud of them!!!"

Which parts of the documentary resonated with you the most and why?

"The stories of the pioneers (Speedy, Rhodes, Sifford, Elder, etc.) struggle and persistence to get access to golf facilities."

"Interviews with minority golfers validated information about Joe Louis’s passion for golf, and how he used his influence to support minority professional golfers."

"The ease of documenting the humanity within the story. The subject matter may originally seem obtuse to an individual that is not a golf enthusiast (like myself). However, the way in which it was done made it an engaging film to watch while maintaining my full attention. I was completely enthralled in the story(ies) that were interwoven within the primary theme of the documentary. I anxiously await the supplementary pieces of the film."

The history of golf in Chicago goes back to the late 19th century, so the game has very deep roots in our area.  This excellent documentary highlights an important part of that history and brings to the forefront the significant role that Joe Louis played in working to open up the doors to the game for the African American community, as well as showcasing the history of the Jackson Park GC, the oldest public course west of the Alleghany mountains.
